About the Riparian Web Portal

The Riparian Web Portal was designed to support Albertans build healthier riparian areas by providing:

  • Access to condition assessments

  • Summary statistics for waterbodies

  • Resources for conservation and restoration

Although riparian data does not exist for all areas in Alberta, many agencies are now making efforts to fill in the gaps. We want to bring that data together here. This web-portal is collaborative project between government and charitable organizations in Alberta.

The purpose of the map is to:

  • Browse riparian intactness data from the new satellite inventories through an interactive map, including a summary tool to quickly see intactness data for a watershed, waterbody, municipality or county.

  • Share examples of on-the-ground restoration projects by landowners and conservation groups

Satellite Data

The Riparian Web Portal uses Satellite Data for analyzing Riparian Intactness. Satellite data is a newer method which has become more common since 2015. Riparian Intactness measures the extent to which natural habitat has been altered or impaired by human activity and uses 3 metrics to look at the amount of:

  • Natural vegetation

  • Woody vegetation

  • Human footprint or impact in that area

Outcomes of Satellite data work:

  • Creates a starting point to observe widescale riparian changes over time

  • Identifies riparian areas that need extra attention due to human impacts

  • Provides watershed-scale guidance to municipal and Non-profit programs that support landowners

  • Provides recommendations to landowners which should always be paired with on-the-ground assessment results.
